Bog Wood

Walk into Bog Wood and you're immediately swallowed by mature woodland - proper deep forest, the kind where light filters through in cathedral shafts and the ground squelches underfoot even in dry weather. Near Stocksfield in Northumberland, this isn't a manicured country estate walk. It's raw, damp, genuinely boggy terrain that demands respect and decent boots.

The woodland itself is old enough to feel established, with native broadleaves creating genuine cover. You'll find the usual suspects - birch, oak, the occasional pine pushing through - but what makes it worthwhile is the actual wetland. The bog gives the wood its character. Paths wind through, mostly manageable if you're prepared for mud, and there's real peace here. No café, no visitor centre, no gift shop. Just trees and squelch.

This is ideal for walkers who want something genuine rather than a manicured country park experience. History enthusiasts might appreciate the old land management evidence you spot if you know what to look for. Families with older kids who don't mind getting their boots mucky will manage fine, though younger ones might find it heavy going if the ground's particularly waterlogged.
