Hyons East Wood

Hyons East Wood is a proper woodland walk just outside Stocksfield - the kind of place that feels a world away from the A695 despite being minutes from it. The forest floor is thick with moss and fallen logs, the canopy dense enough that even on drizzly days you're reasonably sheltered. There's no visitor centre or café, which is either refreshing or annoying depending on your mood.

It's ideal for anyone who likes walking without the crowds. Families with primary-age kids will get a solid hour or two here poking about between the trees, spotting birds if they're quiet, and generally burning off energy. Older walkers after a gentler stroll through proper woodland will find it peaceful rather than challenging. The paths are well-trodden but muddy after rain - good boots recommended.

There's no entrance fee or barriers, so you can rock up whenever suits. Allow a couple of hours maximum unless you're combining it with other walks in the area. The wood works well as a half-day stop if you're staying at Valley View Camping just 1.4 miles away - genuinely excellent reviews on that site, which makes sense given how close it is to decent walking country.

Honestly, it's not the sort of place you'll photograph for Instagram, but that's rather the point. Come here to actually be in the woods, not to tick off a destination. The Tyne Valley around Stocksfield has better-known spots, but if you want woodland without the visitor infrastructure, this delivers.
