Bolling Hall Museum

The house itself is the real draw here - a rambling 17th-century manor that sprawls across Bolling Park on the edge of Shipley, with rooms added piecemeal over centuries so you never quite know what you'll find round the next corner. The Bradford Museums service runs it now, and they've done a decent job of keeping things honest without the overpolished museum feel that kills so many period houses.

You'll walk through period rooms stuffed with furniture, textiles and domestic clutter from the 1600s onwards - proper lived-in stuff rather than pristine display cases. The library is genuinely interesting if you care about old books. The gardens are functional rather than showy, which somehow makes them more appealing.

It works best for families with kids old enough to appreciate a bit of history without needing constant entertainment - young toddlers will find it frustrating pretty quickly. Walkers passing through the area might happily spend an hour here, though it's not worth a major detour unless you're staying nearby. Local history buffs will get more from it than casual visitors.

Free entry is a genuine bonus. Wednesday to Friday it opens at 10am, weekends from 11am, closing at 4pm - give yourself a couple of hours maximum. The location near the parks around Crook Farm and Esholt makes it a sensible stop if you're camping locally and fancy a rainy afternoon activity. It's honest and unpretentious, which is rather refreshing.
