Bomber Hill

The name alone tells you what you're getting - a fell with a story attached. Bomber Hill rises above the Ribble Valley near Clitheroe, and on a clear day the views across Lancashire stretch far enough to make the climb worthwhile. The walk up is straightforward rather than punishing, taking most people around 30 minutes from the car park, and the path is well-trodden enough that you won't need a map to find your way.

What makes it stick with you is the history. During the Second World War, an American bomber crashed here, and the fell's nickname has endured. There's not much to see in terms of monuments - this is genuinely a place where the landscape does the remembering - but it adds weight to what could otherwise be just another Pennine viewpoint. Walkers will find it a decent half-morning's work, families with reasonably fit kids won't struggle, and history buffs will appreciate the quiet reverence of it.

The Ribble Valley parks - Holgates and Parkdean's Todber Valley site are both less than two miles away - make this an easy afternoon sortie from your base. Pop up, get your legs moving, take in the views, and be back in time for a pub lunch in Clitheroe itself. Don't expect crowds or facilities at the summit. Don't expect drama either. Just a honest Lancashire fell with something real to say.
