The walls are lined with hundreds of mounted specimens, arranged in glass cases that wouldn't look out of place in a 19th-century gentleman's study. You're looking at an obsessive's life work: Herbert Edward Booth spent decades collecting birds from across Britain and beyond, and it shows.

The collection is sprawling and gloriously old-fashioned. Rather than the interactive touchscreens you'd expect from a modern museum, you get row upon row of carefully labelled specimens, their glass eyes catching the light. It's wonderfully unglamorous - a genuine time capsule. Bird enthusiasts will lose hours here identifying species and studying plumage detail. Families with younger children might find it less engaging after thirty minutes or so, though the sheer oddness of the place has its own appeal.

Admission is free, which is frankly a steal for something this thorough. Allow at least an hour, more if you're genuinely interested in ornithology. It's a short walk from Brighton town centre, making it an easy stop between visits to nearby parks like Chalky Downs or Southdown Way.
