Border Wood

The Spyside region near Arbroath isn't exactly screaming for forest walks until you stumble upon Border Wood. It's a proper pocket of ancient woodland that feels like you've stepped out of the mapped world entirely - dark pines, damp earth, the works. The forest floor is thick with needles and moss, and there's a decent network of paths threading through if you're after a gentle ramble or something with a bit more purpose.

It's the kind of place where you'll spot red squirrels if you're lucky, and the quietness is almost unsettling after you've been anywhere near civilisation. Don't expect dramatic views or Instagram moments - this is about the texture of the place, the smell of the forest, the sound of boots on soft ground. Walkers will appreciate it more than casual strollers; families with young kids might find it a bit samey after thirty minutes unless they're the type to hunt for wildlife.

The nearest proper base is Arbroath, though that's more seaside town than forest gateway. If you're staying at The Grange Glamping just down the road, Border Wood makes an excellent half-day break from animal encounters and campfire suppers. It's free to wander, open whenever you fancy, and worth two or three hours depending on which paths you take. Best in autumn when the light filters through differently, or spring when things are starting to wake up. Winter can be muddy and fairly gloomy, so pack accordingly.
