Montrose Basin Local Nature Reserve

The moment you step out onto the viewing platform at Montrose Basin, you're looking at one of Scotland's most important wetlands - a vast expanse of tidal mudflats and saltmarsh that transforms completely depending on the time of day and season. It's genuinely arresting: thousands of wading birds descend here during migration periods, and even in quieter months you'll spot redshank, curlew, and if you're lucky, white-tailed eagles overhead.

This is a serious spot for birdwatchers and nature photographers. The visitor centre gives you the lowdown on what's about, and there are proper hides dotted around where you can settle in with binoculars without disturbing anything. Families with patient kids will manage an hour or two here; restless under-tens might find it a bit slow. Go at high tide if you want to see waders packed together like a football crowd. Low tide shows you the mudflats themselves, which is almost hypnotic in a different way.

It's completely free, and that's the beauty of it. You're not paying for some polished experience - you're just getting access to something genuinely wild on the Aberdeenshire coast, about twenty minutes from Arbroath.
