Herringthorpe Playing Fields

The flatness here is deceptive. Herringthorpe Playing Fields, just outside Rotherham, looks unremarkable at first - a stretch of open grassland alongside the River Rother that most people drive past without noticing. But spend an hour walking the perimeter paths and you'll realise why local birdwatchers won't shut up about it.

This is proper wetland habitat, the kind of place where waders and waterfowl actually want to be. In spring and autumn the passage migrants are outstanding - you'll see lapwings, redshanks, and if you're lucky, little egrets picking through the shallow pools. Even in winter there's action: snipe, teal, and the occasional rarer visitor. The meadows attract skylarks and grey partridges, which is increasingly rare in South Yorkshire.

It's a straightforward reserve with no facilities and no visitor centre, so come prepared. Binoculars are essential; patience helps more than most places. Families with young kids will lose interest quickly unless they're already keen on spotting things. Walkers and birders, though, will find it genuinely rewarding, especially if you time visits around migration periods.

If you're based at Hooton Lodge Farm or Waleswood - both decent caravan parks within a few miles - this makes a morning detour worth considering. Rother Valley Country Park, just 6 miles south, offers more amenities and open water if you want something less specialist. But Herringthorpe rewards a closer look.
