Bottom Copse

A proper woodland walk through ancient Hampshire forest, Bottom Copse delivers the kind of quiet you don't get near Southampton. The trees here are thick and old, the sort of place where you half expect to stumble on a clearing and find a medieval knight having a sit-down. It's dense mixed woodland - oak, beech, maybe some ash - the canopy proper overhead so even on bright days it feels like dusk.

The walk itself isn't marked with fancy signage or gravel paths. You're threading through the undergrowth, boots doing the work, and that's rather the point. It's free access and there's no visitor centre or facilities, so come prepared with decent footwear and a map if you're not confident with navigation. Allow an hour or so if you're just doing a loop, longer if you fancy exploring the deeper parts.

This is squarely a walkers' place - families with young children will find it heavy going without clear trails, and there's nothing to stop and gawk at in that tourism sense. Serious nature types, though, will love it. Woodland birds are prolific if you're quiet enough, and in spring the forest floor erupts with bluebells. Winter's decent too when leaf cover drops and you can actually see the structure of the woodland.

If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan sites - Beechen Glamping is closest at just over two miles - it's an easy morning or afternoon outing before heading back for a camp cook-up. Skip it if you want groomed trails and cafes, but come here if you want to remember why woodlands matter.
