Sargant's Copse

Walk into Sargant's Copse and you've entered proper Hampshire woodland - the kind with moss-covered oaks, a good thick canopy, and the sort of silence that makes you forget Southampton's just down the road. It's a forest rather than a manicured nature reserve, which means it feels genuinely wild without requiring specialist kit to explore.

The main appeal here is straightforward: a decent woodland walk through mixed trees with paths that wind through the undergrowth. You're not getting any dramatic vistas or marked trails with interpretation boards. What you get instead is the meditative stuff - the light filtering through branches, the smell of damp earth, birdsong. Walkers will appreciate it far more than families after a spectacle. Children might manage thirty minutes before asking when you're turning back, unless they're the type who genuinely enjoy getting muddy and hunting for sticks.

Timing-wise, allow an hour to two hours depending on how lost you want to get. There's no admission charge as far as anyone can tell, and no formal opening hours either - it's the kind of place you just turn up to when you fancy it. Winter's probably best for not drowning in mud; late spring when everything's in leaf has its own appeal.

Staying at Beechen Glamping or Woodlands Camping puts you close enough for a morning ramble before moving on to something with more visitor infrastructure. It's not a destination in itself, but as part of a broader New Forest area exploration, it's worth the detour if you're already camping nearby.
