Boughton Fen

Flat, windswept, and absolutely silent - that's Boughton Fen in a nutshell. This is Norfolk wetland proper, stretching east of King's Lynn with barely a tree in sight, just open water, reed beds, and the kind of sky that seems to go on for ever. It's the sort of place where you actually notice the birdsong because there's nothing else to distract you.

You won't find a visitor centre or facilities here. This is working wetland, managed for wildlife, and the appeal is straightforward: if you're into birdwatching, you'll want binoculars and a decent field guide. Marsh harriers hunt overhead in summer, and winter brings in thousands of wildfowl. Even if ornithology isn't your thing, there's something properly grounding about standing in the middle of all that space with just the wind and the reeds.

Walkers should expect muddy paths and the occasional flooded section depending on the season. It's not a circular stroll with views - more a case of picking your way through and soaking up the raw, unglamorous beauty of the Fens. Allow an hour minimum, longer if you're serious about spotting things.
