Bow Hill

The walk up Bow Hill rewards you with proper views across the Dumfries and Galloway landscape - flat farmland stretches out below, and on a clear day you can pick out the shape of the Southern Uplands rolling away to the south. It's not a long slog either, which means you won't spend all afternoon getting there and back.

This is a straightforward fell walk rather than anything technical. The peak itself sits at a decent height without being exhausting, making it well suited to families who've got walkers aged eight or upwards, or anyone wanting a half-day outing from Lockerbie. The ground can be boggy after rain - it's Scottish lowland terrain, so come prepared for wet feet.

You'll likely have the place to yourself, which is either brilliant or tells you something about how many other attractions compete for your time in the area. Allow two to three hours if you're not rushing. There's no visitor infrastructure on the hill itself, so take water and snacks.

Stay at one of the caravan parks dotted within a few miles - Hoddom Castle, Queensberry Bay, or Cressfield - and you've got a solid base for mixing walks with exploring the broader region. Bow Hill works best as part of a longer day rather than a standalone destination, but if you're already in the area and the weather's on your side, it's absolutely worth the detour.
