Box Hill Country Park

The chalky escarpment rises sharply from the Mole Valley just south of Tadworth, and Box Hill Country Park is where that landscape becomes properly dramatic. You're looking at a steep woodland slope covered in beech and yew, with views across the Weald that stretch for miles on a clear day. The walking here is genuinely excellent - there's a main path that winds up through the trees, or if you're feeling keen, you can tackle the tighter tracks that switchback through the scrub and grassland on the exposed southern face.

Walkers will find this pays real dividends. The climb takes maybe forty minutes from the car park, and the payoff is a proper panorama - not a token vista, but something you actually remember. On weekends it gets busy, especially families, though the paths are wide enough that it doesn't feel cramped. Kids with decent legs will manage the ascent fine; younger ones might struggle with the steeper sections.

Free to visit, free to park. Bring water - there's nothing up top. The best time is late spring through early autumn when the chalk grassland's at its best and the views are clearest. Combine this with Norbury Park or Surrey Hills National Landscape nearby for a proper day out among the rolling country. If you're staying at any of the local holiday parks - Merrywood's just over a mile away - this is an obvious morning or afternoon mission. Well worth the drive if you're within half an hour.
