Juniper Hill

Standing at 223 metres, this Surrey hilltop gives you proper views across the North Downs without the crowds you'll find at Box Hill. The summit sits just south of Tadworth, and on a clear day you can see right across to the South Downs - though the view's partially blocked by trees these days.

Walkers will appreciate the network of bridleways that wind up through Banstead Woods to reach the top. It's not a challenging climb, making it ideal for families with older children who can manage a decent uphill stretch. The National Trust's Polesden Lacey estate lies nearby, so you could easily combine both in a day out.

Don't expect dramatic panoramas - this is more about the satisfaction of reaching a proper Surrey peak than Instagram-worthy vistas. The wooded approach means you're walking through lovely beech and oak woodland for much of the route, which is particularly good in autumn when the leaves turn.

If you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like Surrey Hills Yurts or the camping at Polesden Lacey, it makes for a decent morning walk. Allow two to three hours for the round trip from Tadworth, including time at the summit. Worth combining with a visit to the village pub afterwards - you'll have earned it.
