Bracken Cave

You'll find Bracken Cave tucked into the limestone country south of Leyburn, and it's the sort of place that rewards a bit of effort to get there. The cave itself is modest in scale - nothing on the scale of the show caves you'll find elsewhere in Yorkshire - but that's rather the point. There's a quietness to it, a sense that you're properly exploring rather than following a marked tourist trail.

The entrance is framed by moss and ferns, and the interior opens up into chambers draped in stalactites and flowstone formations. You'll need a torch and proper footwear; the passage narrows in places and the floor can be slick. It's not a long visit - perhaps thirty minutes if you take your time - but it feels like genuine caving rather than a museum experience.

Walkers will get the most from this one. The approach involves a decent hike through the Wensleydale landscape, and combining it with a circuit round the local fells makes for a proper morning or afternoon out. Families with older kids aged ten plus will manage fine; younger children might find the scrambling bits tricky. History enthusiasts won't find much to work with here - it's geology that matters.
