Bragg's Mill

The mill itself is long gone, but Bragg's Mill near Cambridge is one of those places where you can still feel the industrial heartbeat of medieval East Anglia. What remains is essentially earthworks - the raised platform where the structure once stood, plus the millpond and sluice channels that fed water to the wheel. It's not dramatic, but it tells a proper story if you take time to read it.

This works best for history buffs and walkers who want something quieter than the city centre. You won't need more than 30 minutes here unless you're genuinely interested in milling technology and how these sites were engineered. The walk itself is pleasant enough, with decent views across the surrounding countryside.

Access and opening details are thin on the ground - no visitor centre, no facilities that I'm aware of. Go during daylight, ideally when the ground isn't waterlogged, and dress for muddy conditions. It's free to visit, naturally.

If you're staying at one of the excellent glamping spots nearby - HappenOak Treehouse, Readers Field, or Hidden Gem, all within five miles - this makes an easy morning detour. Combine it with a walk along the river or a proper Cambridge afternoon, and you've got a decent half-day sorted. Don't expect crowds or photo ops. Expect peace and a genuine sense of how Cambridgeshire worked centuries ago.
