Bransley Hill

The walk up Bransley Hill from Dunbar takes you through proper moorland terrain with views that stretch across East Lothian towards the coast. It's not a massive peak - more of a serious walk than a scramble - but the perspective from the top is worth the effort. On a clear day you're looking out across the Lammermuir Hills and down to the Firth of Forth. The moorland itself is the thing here; rolling golden grass and heather depending on the season, with enough wind to remind you you're in Scotland.

Walkers will find this straightforward enough, though it's not a casual stroll. Allow a couple of hours there and back from Dunbar, longer if you're the type who stops for photographs every hundred metres. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might find it a bit relentless. There's nothing on the summit itself - no café, no gift shop, just the actual outdoors - which is rather the point.

If you're staying at Belhaven Bay Caravan Park just down the road, this makes a proper morning walk before lunch. Combine it with a wander around Dunbar itself and you've got a decent day. Best visited in decent weather; a full cloud cover strips away half the appeal. Go early if you can - the moorland gets quieter as the day goes on.
