Branton Ponds

The ponds themselves aren't much to look at - three shallow bodies of water dotted across moorland just outside Alnwick. But that's rather the point. Branton Ponds work best as a proper walk, not a destination you drive to and admire from a car park. The surrounding landscape is what makes it worth your time: rolling Northumberland moorland, clear views across to the Cheviot Hills, and enough peace and quiet to actually hear yourself think.

It's a walker's spot, no question about it. The paths are straightforward enough for families, though small children might flag after forty minutes or so. The water attracts herons, ducks, and various wildfowl, so birdwatchers should bring binoculars. Photographers will find decent light in late afternoon, when the water picks up the surrounding hills.

The access is free and there are no formal opening hours - it's moorland, after all. Allow an hour for a gentle circuit, longer if you're stopping to watch birds or just taking in the view. Winter visits have their charm, particularly when the moorland's bleached and bare, but summer is when the paths are driest underfoot.

If you're camping at River Breamish Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite - less than half a mile away - Branton Ponds makes for a pleasant morning walk before heading into Alnwick proper. It's also close enough to blend into a wider day exploring the surrounding moors and walking country. Don't expect drama. What you get instead is honest Northumberland landscape and the kind of quiet that feels rare these days.
