Hepburn Wood

The woodland around Hepburn sits just south of Alnwick, a proper slice of Northumberland forest that rewards a decent walk but won't blow your mind if you're expecting dramatic viewpoints. It's mixed woodland - the sort of place where you get real trees, a bit of birdsong, and enough shelter to make it halfway pleasant even when the drizzle rolls in.

Walking through Hepburn Wood itself is straightforward enough. The paths are reasonable, there's a gentle roll to the terrain, and if you're after a couple of hours away from a caravan or holiday park without breaking a sweat, it does the job. Families with kids aged five upwards won't struggle, though there's nothing that'll make them demand to stay longer. It's the kind of woodland walk that's good for clearing your head rather than keeping you entertained.

The real value here is location. Base yourself at one of the parks nearby - Riverside Wooler or River Breamish are both within five miles - and Hepburn Wood becomes a decent half-day option when the weather's cooperating. Pair it with Alnwick's castle and high street if you want a proper day out, or use it as a breather between bigger attractions.

Go in spring when the woodland floor's just waking up, or autumn when you've got colour without the summer crowds. Winter can be muddy and grim. Free access, no facilities to speak of - bring a flask and move on.
