Brass on the Grass

There's a rather excellent brass band festival that happens on the grass in Northamptonshire, drawing proper crowds of music enthusiasts each year. If you're staying anywhere near Leicester and fancy a day out that doesn't revolve around theme parks or shopping centres, this is genuinely worth pencilling in.

The event itself is exactly what it says on the tin - brass bands performing outdoors on parkland, which sounds straightforward enough but lands differently when you're actually there. The sound carries across the grass, families spread out on blankets, and there's that lovely British summer feel of it all. You don't need to be a brass band devotee to enjoy it either. Even if orchestral music isn't normally your thing, there's something about hearing it live in the open air that works.

It's free to attend, which is the main reason to go. Bring a picnic, arrive early for a decent spot, and plan to spend a good three or four hours there. If the weather turns, you might regret not bringing a brolly. As for timing, it runs during specific dates each year, so check ahead.

The proximity to Valley View Escapes and Brook Meadow makes this a decent addition to a park-based holiday. Pair it with local walks and you've got a proper weekend sorted. It's not a daylong attraction, but it's exactly the kind of low-key cultural experience that stops a holiday feeling too samey.
