The canal basin at Braunston is one of those places that sneaks up on you. You'll round a corner near Daventry and suddenly there's a proper working marina - narrowboats moored up, their paintwork gleaming, the water reflecting the sky. It's the kind of spot where you can actually watch people living a lifestyle that most of us only daydream about.

What makes Braunston work is that it's not a tourist trap pretending to be authentic. This is a genuine inland waterway hub where people moor their boats, buy supplies, and chat about lock systems over a pint. You can walk the towpath for free, grab a coffee from one of the cafes, and spend a good hour just absorbing the atmosphere. If you're into narrowboats, it's brilliant - hire one for a few days and you'll understand why people become obsessed with canal life. Even if you're not, the walk is pleasant and the whole area has a proper sense of purpose.

Families get the most from it if they're the type to take their time and let kids mess about near the water's edge. It's not action-packed - no rides or attractions - but that's rather the point. The nearby glamping options at EWE (less than half a mile away) and Hideaway Wood Farm make it easy to base yourself here for a few nights and explore the wider canal network. Allow an hour minimum, though you could happily spend twice that if you're properly into boats or just fancy a quiet spot away from the usual tourist circuit.
