Braziers Grove

Walk into Braziers Grove and you're immediately wrapped in proper old-growth woodland - the kind where sunlight filters through in dusty shafts and the canopy feels genuinely ancient. It's a forest that demands exploration, with paths that wind deeper into the Essex countryside just east of Royston, far enough from the noise but close enough for a half-day excursion.

The appeal here is straightforward: woodland walkers will find it rewarding, and families with kids keen on nature spotting won't tire of it quickly. The paths are manageable rather than brutal, so it's not a full-day commitment, though you could easily lose two hours if you're the type to pause and listen. Mushroom hunters come in season. Birdwatchers find reason to return.

I'd allow an hour minimum if you're just dipping in, three hours if you're serious about covering ground and actually noticing things. There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of - bring your own water - but that's rather the point. The forest keeps its dignity that way.

Pair it sensibly with a stay at Pightle Farm Campsite, four and a bit miles away, where you get a proper base camp without the theme park atmosphere. Or push slightly further to Hidden Gem Glamping if you want something smarter. Either way, Braziers Grove works well as the morning's exploration before you settle into campsite life. It's the sort of place that rewards being local, but visitors pass through often enough that you won't feel entirely alone.
