Brean Down

Standing 320 feet above the Bristol Channel, this limestone headland juts dramatically into the sea like Somerset's answer to the White Cliffs of Dover. The walk to the top takes about 45 minutes from the main car park near Brean village, following a well-worn path that's steep in places but manageable for anyone with decent fitness.

From the summit, you'll get proper views across the water to Wales on clear days, with the Mendip Hills rolling away behind you. The remains of Palmerston Fort sit at the very end - a Victorian military installation that's seen better days but adds a bit of historical interest to the trek.

Families with older children will love this one, though I'd skip it with toddlers unless you fancy carrying them halfway up. The wind can be fierce at the top, so pack layers even on warm days. Dog walkers are in their element here - just keep leads handy near the cliff edges.

It's free to explore and you can easily spend half a day here if you're not rushing. The walk down takes you past some interesting rock formations and there's often decent wildlife spotting.
