The Bridewell in Fakenham is exactly the sort of place that stops you in your tracks - a proper working prison from the 18th century, preserved in grim detail. You're walking through actual cells where people were locked up for petty crimes, theft, vagrancy. The buildings themselves tell the story better than any placard could: narrow corridors, tiny windows, the sheer bleakness of it all.

It's a museum now, run with surprising care. The layout lets you trace how the system actually worked - the governor's quarters, the exercise yard, the punishment block. Dark stuff, genuinely unsettling in places, but that's rather the point. History isn't always comfortable, and this museum doesn't soften the edges.

Historians will spend a good couple of hours here. Families with teenagers interested in social history or crime get genuine value, though younger kids might find it a bit much - there's no sugar-coating of what Bridewells were for. Allow 90 minutes minimum, longer if you read everything.

Fakenham itself is a market town with enough going on if the weather turns, and you're well-positioned for the north Norfolk coast. Several decent caravan parks sit within 5 miles - Pinewoods and Norfolk Coast Caravans are the closest options. It's worth fitting this into a broader Norfolk trip rather than making a special journey, but if you're staying nearby, skip it at your peril. Not cheerful, but compelling.
