Bridghthouse Plantation

A proper woodland walk rather than a manicured tourist spot, Bridghthouse Plantation sits just outside Kirkcudbright in Dumfries and Galloway. The forest here is dense conifer mixed with deciduous trees - the kind of place where the light filters through in shafts and you actually feel like you've stepped away from things. There are marked trails threading through, ranging from gentle woodland strolls to more ambitious loops if you fancy a proper trek.

It's ideal for families who want to let their kids loose in a natural setting without the crowds you'd get at bigger attractions. Dog walkers will appreciate the room to roam, and anyone after a decent walk with genuine forest atmosphere will find it worth the detour. The undergrowth is thick in places, so wellies are sensible if it's been wet.

The whole place is free to access, and you can spend anything from forty minutes on a quick wander to a couple of hours exploring properly. Spring and early summer are lovely for woodland wildflowers and bird activity. Autumn's decent too if you want colour without the summer midges.

If you're based at Brighouse Bay Holiday Park just down the road, this makes an easy morning or afternoon break from caravan life. It won't take long to get there, and it genuinely beats sitting around the site. Not a must-do if you're short on time, but well worth knowing about if you're planning a proper Galloway stay.
