Ross Bay

Ross Bay sits just outside Kirkcudbright, a proper working harbour town that doesn't feel like it's been packaged for tourists. The beach itself is a crescent of shingle and sand that feels genuinely local - you'll see families actually using it rather than posing for photos. Low tide reveals rock pools worth a rummage through, and the bay opens up to the Solway Firth with views across to the English coastline on a clear day.

It's the kind of place where you can walk for twenty minutes and have the whole thing to yourself, especially outside peak summer weeks. The backdrop of green fields rolling down to the water gives it a distinctly Scottish character - nothing dramatic or showy, just quietly pleasant. Kids will find enough to occupy them here: rock pooling, stone skimming, spotting the occasional seal if you're lucky.

The town of Kirkcudbright itself is worth an hour or two - proper little artists' community with decent independent shops and cafes. Several holiday parks sit within spitting distance: Solway View Holidays is barely half a mile away, and Brighouse Bay and Domes By The Sea are both within easy reach if you're staying put for a few days.

Free to access, no facilities right on the bay itself, so bring what you need. Allow an hour or two depending on how much pool-hunting appeals. Not a destination beach - more a natural extension of a Kirkcudbright break where you want proper countryside and a bit of coast without the crowds.
