Bridlington Priory, Church

The ruins of Bridlington Priory stand in the town centre like a reminder that this seaside resort was once a serious pilgrimage destination. What you're looking at is the gatehouse and fragments of what was a massive Augustinian priory founded in 1188 - the church itself is long gone, but the surviving Norman archway is genuinely impressive, all that weathered stone holding its ground after eight centuries.

You can wander round freely and take your time examining the stonework. History buffs will spend a good half hour picking out the architectural details, but families with younger kids might find it a bit underwhelming after ten minutes - there's not much hands-on activity here. The setting, right in the middle of Bridlington town, means you can easily combine it with a stroll along the seafront or a proper fish and chips lunch.

Parking is straightforward since it's town-centre, and admission appears to be free. If you're staying at South Shore Holiday Park or South Cliff - both within walking distance - it's worth an hour of your morning before heading to the beach. The priory itself won't justify a special trip on its own, but as part of a broader Bridlington visit it fills a gap nicely. Go on a quieter weekday if you can; weekends get a bit busy with shoppers.
