Brig "Visiter"

The Brig Visiter sits in Whitby, a three-masted vessel that's become one of the town's most distinctive landmarks. This isn't some polished museum piece - it's a proper working ship, or at least it was, and standing on her deck gives you a genuine sense of what life at sea actually felt like in the 18th century. The ship's low ceilings, cramped quarters, and narrow companionways make it clear why sailors were a hardy breed.

You can walk the decks and explore below, getting a feel for how crews lived and worked in confined spaces. It's hands-on in the best way - no velvet ropes, no glass barriers. Kids tend to find it genuinely interesting rather than stuffy, especially if they've read any seafaring tales beforehand. History enthusiasts will appreciate the authentic details, though the ship's actual origins and significance vary depending on which source you consult.

Whitby itself is excellent for a holiday park base. Northcliffe & Seaview Holiday Parks are less than two miles away and both rated highly, while Whitby Holiday Park sits a bit further out at 4.3 miles. The town's coastal position means you'll find plenty of other attractions within easy reach - the famous pier, the ruined abbey looming over the clifftop, and decent fish and chips on the harbourside.

Allow an hour or so for the Visiter unless you're genuinely ship-mad, in which case you could stretch to ninety minutes. It's worth fitting in during a Whitby visit, especially on a grey Yorkshire day when a bit of maritime atmosphere feels rather apt.
