Whitby

Gothic spires pierce the sea mist while fishing boats bob in the harbour below - this is Yorkshire's most atmospheric coastal town. Whitby wears its maritime heritage proudly, from the 199 steps climbing to the abbey ruins where Bram Stoker found his inspiration for Dracula, to the narrow cobbled streets packed with jet jewellery shops and fish and chip queues.

The twin piers frame a working harbour that's been landing catches for centuries. Captain Cook learned his trade here, and his statue overlooks the town from the West Cliff. Proper old-fashioned seaside charm meets Gothic drama - you'll find Punch and Judy shows alongside vampire tours.

Beyond the town, the North Yorkshire Moors stretch inland in rolling purple waves of heather. Grey Heugh Head offers cracking walks with coastal views, while Barley Carr Rigg provides a proper fell challenge for those wanting to stretch their legs. The Whitby Distillery crafts award-winning gin using local botanicals - worth a visit between abbey explorations.

History buffs shouldn't miss Postgate Cross, marking an ancient route across the moors. The surrounding countryside is crossed with old drove roads and pack horse tracks, perfect for getting away from the summer crowds.

Whitby sits on the A171, easily reached from York or Middlesbrough. Parking in town gets tricky during peak season, especially when the goth weekends descend twice yearly. Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks means you can walk into town for the evening fish supper, then retreat to quieter surroundings.
