Brindles Wood

The trees here are seriously dense - dark canopy, dappled light on the forest floor, the whole lot. Brindles Wood sits just outside Billericay and gives you proper woodland walking without needing to venture far into the Essex countryside. You're talking ancient woodland in places, with paths that wind through beech and oak, the kind of spot where you might actually see something decent like a woodpecker if you're quiet enough.

It's ideal for families who don't fancy a marathon hike but want their kids to burn off some energy among the trees. The paths are manageable - no scrambling over boulders or anything ambitious - though they can get boggy after rain, so decent boots matter. Walkers after a straightforward woodland stomp will find it satisfying enough for an hour or so, though it won't blow your mind with views or dramatic scenery. History buffs won't find much to get excited about here either.

If you're camping at Barleylands Campsite just four miles away, this makes a solid morning outing before heading back for lunch. The whole thing works well as a gentle break from park life - fresh air, a bit of exercise, no entrance fees hanging over your head. Go early on weekends if you want some peace and quiet; otherwise it can get a bit busy with local dog walkers. Summer's pleasant enough, but autumn when the light drops lower through the branches is genuinely lovely.
