Broad Stand

The walk up to Broad Stand rewards you with one of the Lake District's most dramatic viewpoints. You're standing on a rocky outcrop above Mickledore, looking straight down into Scafell Pike's eastern face - the exposure is genuine, the drop real. It's not a gentle viewing platform; it's raw fell country where the landscape sprawls in every direction without apology.

This one's for walkers with proper legs and a head for heights. The approach via Mickledore is steep and involves some scrambling over loose scree. Families with young children will find it challenging; day-trippers expecting an easy stroll should look elsewhere. But if you're the type who's comfortable on fell and genuinely interested in mountain geography, the vista justifies every hard breath. You can see Wasdale Head to the west, the Langdale Pikes dropping away south, and on clear days the perspective on how these peaks relate to each other suddenly makes sense.

Allow three to four hours for the round trip from the valley floor. Conditions matter enormously here - cloud can roll in and flatten everything to grey nothing. Early morning tends to be your best bet. There's no facilities at the viewpoint itself, so come prepared.

If you're based at Great Langdale Campsite or Fisherground Campsite, you're perfectly positioned for this walk. Both are within striking distance, and the climb from New Dungeon Ghyll car park is the most sensible approach. It's a proper fell day, not a casual outing.
