Ambleside

Slate cottages line narrow streets where walkers clutch maps and debate routes over proper coffee. This is fell-walking central, where the serious hikers come to tackle the Langdale Pikes and where every conversation revolves around weather windows and the state of the paths.

Ambleside sits at the head of Windermere like a mountaineering base camp disguised as a market town. The outdoor shops outnumber the cafes, which tells you everything about what this place is really for. Pike of Stickle and Pavey Ark loom above the rooftops, part of that famous Langdale skyline that graces a thousand postcards.

Great Langdale valley stretches west like a green corridor into the high fells. It's where the real climbing starts - Wetherlam, High Raise, and the rest of that magnificent horseshoe of peaks that makes the Lake District special. Side Pike offers a gentler introduction if you're working up to the bigger stuff.

History buffs will find Castle Howe, the Norman motte that gave the town its defensive start, and the ancient Ting Mound where Vikings once held court. The Cup mark artworks remind you that people have been drawn to these valleys for millennia.

The town gets properly busy in summer - coach parties and day-trippers mixing with the serious fell-runners setting off at dawn. But arrive early or visit midweek and you'll get a sense of what draws people back here year after year.
