Broadwater Park

Broadwater Park is a proper nature reserve just outside Guildford, the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. It's a mix of woodland and wetland - the kind of landscape that shifts between seasons, so it never feels quite the same twice. You get good walking trails through the trees, and if you time it right, you'll spot waterfowl around the water areas. The wetland section is the real draw; it's where the reserve does its best work ecologically, though it can get a bit boggy underfoot depending on rainfall.

Walkers will find the most value here - it's genuine countryside within a stone's throw of suburban Surrey. Birdwatchers and anyone interested in how wetland habitats actually function will get absorbed for an hour or two. Families with small children might manage forty-five minutes before the novelty wears thin unless the kids are genuinely keen on spotting wildlife. The paths are manageable rather than demanding, so it's not a proper hike.

It makes a solid afternoon stop if you're based at one of the local holiday parks - Firesyde and Chantry Wood Campsite are both close enough for an easy visit. Bring binoculars if you've got them, proper footwear if there's been rain, and expect to see the reserve at its best in spring and autumn when migrating birds pass through. The location near Guildford means you can combine it with a town visit without too much faffing about.
