Brock Crags (Wainwright)

The walk up Brock Crags is a proper little scramble, steep enough to make you earn the views but short enough that you won't regret it. It's one of Wainwright's Lake District fells - nothing massive, sitting just under 1,600 feet - but the rocky approach keeps things interesting and the summit rewards you with decent vistas across to Helvellyn and down towards Penrith.

Most people tackle it as part of a longer circuit, but you can do it as a standalone walk from Glenridding in about two hours return if you're moving at a reasonable pace. The terrain is loose scree in places, so proper boots matter. Families with older kids might find it fun; younger ones could find the steep bits tedious.

What makes Brock Crags worth the detour is the solitude. It doesn't have the crowds of its more famous neighbours, which means you might genuinely be alone up there on a weekday. The scrambling section keeps walkers with full packs away, which is fine by me.

If you're camping nearby - Crossgate Luxury Glamping is less than a mile away - you could knock this out before breakfast and still have the afternoon free. Sykeside just down the road offers more traditional camping if you're after that setup. The fell pairs well with Catacol on the same hillside or as a warm-up before tackling something bigger like Helvellyn from the same base.
