Brockwell Meadows Local Nature Reserve

Just outside Colchester, Brockwell Meadows is one of those places where you realise how much wildlife can thrive in a relatively small corner of Essex. It's a local nature reserve - nothing flashy, no visitor centre or café - just proper grassland and wetland where you can actually spot things. We saw several species of dragonfly on our visit, and the bird life is genuinely impressive for somewhere so close to town.

The meadows work best for walkers and nature enthusiasts rather than families wanting a quick half-hour outing. You'll want at least two hours to do it justice, longer if you're into serious birdwatching. Spring and early summer are the sweet spot - the wildflowers are decent and the insect activity picks up. It's free to wander, which is always welcome.

The ground can be boggy depending on rainfall, so bring proper footwear. There's no obvious car park right at the entrance either, which takes a bit of the shine off logistics-wise, but once you're in, the paths are clear enough.

If you're staying at Teybrook Orchard just down the road, this makes a nice morning walk before heading into Colchester itself. It's low-key and genuinely useful as a breather from holiday park life rather than a day's entertainment in itself. Worth knowing about if you're in the area, though don't rearrange your plans to visit specifically.
