Bronydd Wood

Walking into Bronydd Wood feels like stepping properly off the map. This stretch of forest sits just outside Hereford, where the Welsh borderlands start getting serious about their hills, and it's the sort of place that rewards you for bothering to find it.

The wood itself is manageable - you can wander through for an hour or push it to two hours depending on how much you fancy exploring the various trails that thread through. The canopy is dense enough to feel like you've left civilization behind, but it's not so vast that you'll get hopelessly lost. Fallen trees, moss-covered rocks, and the kind of quiet that reminds you why people bother with forests at all.

It's brilliant for families who want their kids to actually move around without the artificial surfaces and queuing you get at theme parks. Keen walkers will appreciate it as a proper stretch of legs between bigger commitments - the terrain's varied enough to keep things interesting without being punishing. History types won't find anything particularly ancient here, but the woodland ecology itself tells a story if you're into that sort of thing.

If you're staying at Borders Hideaway or By the Wye Glamping - both just under two miles away - this makes a solid morning or afternoon sortie. Hay-on-Wye is close enough for a full day trip if you combine it with the town's bookshops. Go when it's not chucking it down. The paths get properly sodden, and wellington-squelching isn't everyone's idea of woodland romance.
