Brooklands Wood

A proper woodland walk just outside Hassocks, Brooklands Wood gives you that satisfying deep-forest feeling without needing to drive halfway across Sussex. The trees here are thick enough that you genuinely lose the surrounding towns, even though they're closer than you'd think.

What you're actually doing is wandering through established woodland on foot - there are decent paths that wind through the canopy, and it's the sort of place where you'll spot bluebells in spring if you time it right. Nothing dramatic happens. No visitor centre, no gift shop, no obligatory tea room. Just trees, birdsong, and the occasional muddy section after rain.

This works best for anyone who likes a proper leg-stretch without the faffing about. Families with kids who can walk at least an hour will find it engaging enough, though older children might wonder why they're not climbing something or spotting rare species. If you're an adult who just needs to get into the woods and think, it's ideal.

The real value here is pairing it with Wild Boar Wood Campsite, just four and a half miles away. You can base yourself there and do morning or evening walks through Brooklands - it's close enough to pop back for lunch. Allow two to three hours for a proper wander, or just do a quick circuit if time's tight.

Go in autumn when the light's lower and the paths are carpeted in leaves. It's less muddy than spring and the crowds are thinner.
