Brownbank Plantation

You'll find yourself walking under a proper canopy of mature trees at Brownbank Plantation, just outside Stoke-on-Trent. It's a working forest rather than a manicured attraction, which means it feels properly wild - the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think rather than queue for a photo opportunity.

The plantation offers straightforward woodland walking through mixed forest. Paths wind through the trees, and if the weather's been dry, they're manageable underfoot. It's the sort of place where an hour is enough unless you're the type who wants to spend an afternoon spotting birds or getting genuinely lost in the woods. Families with younger kids might find it a bit ordinary - there's no visitor centre, café, or obvious focal point, just trees and quiet.

Walkers and nature enthusiasts will get more from it. You're looking at genuine woodland ecology rather than themed attractions. The real appeal is that it's free access and peaceful, a genuine break from the countryside caravan parks clustered nearby - Springfields Countryside and Field Head Farm are both within a few miles if you're based at one of those. It's the sort of place you visit because you're already in the area, not because you're making a special journey.

Go early morning if you can, when it's least crowded. There's no admission charge as far as I can establish, which at least means you're not out of pocket if you decide it's not your thing after twenty minutes. Bring proper footwear - it's forest floor, not promenade.
