Brownridge Plantation

The forest here is proper woodland - the sort where you can actually get lost if you're not paying attention to the path. Brownridge Plantation spreads across Northumberland countryside just outside Belford, and it's the kind of place that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick tick-box visit.

What you get is straight-up forest walking. Conifer plantations mixed with older broadleaves, the ground soft underfoot, decent enough trails that work for families but won't feel patronising if you're after a genuine trek. The canopy's thick enough that even on grey days - which is most days round here - there's something atmospheric about it. You'll spot the odd clearing, maybe catch sight of birds if you're lucky, and the air feels properly clean.

It's ideal for anyone who just wants to disappear into the trees for an hour or two without needing visitor centres, tea shops, or interpretation boards. Families with capable walkers will get on fine. Kids who expect entertainment might find it a bit dull. Photographers hunting forest light will appreciate the density of the woodland.

Belford's the nearest proper town if you need supplies or a coffee beforehand. The plantation itself appears to be free access - no gates, no fees evident - though frankly the lack of a website means you'd be wise to ring ahead or check locally before planning a trip. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you want to do it justice. Best visited when it's not waterlogged, which narrows the season considerably in Northumberland.

If you're camping at one of the local parks - South Meadows or Budle Bay are closest - this makes a solid morning or afternoon activity to break up the holiday routine.
