Broxbourne Woods

You'll find Broxbourne Woods just outside Hertford, a proper stretch of mixed woodland that's ideal if you want to shake off the caravan site routine without driving halfway across the county. The woods are straightforward - mature trees, well-trodden paths, decent open spaces where you can actually see sky between the canopy. It's the kind of place where walkers genuinely outnumber joggers, and children won't complain endlessly about being dragged around.

The appeal here is in the simplicity. There's no entrance fee, no opening hours nonsense, just woodland that works year-round. Spring brings bluebells if you time it right, autumn's decent for the colour, and winter footfall is light enough that you get proper peace. Walking the main loops takes between 45 minutes and two hours depending on which paths you choose - long enough to feel like you've actually been somewhere, short enough that younger kids won't mutiny.

It's particularly good for families based at Hertford Camping and Caravanning Club Site or Lee Valley Caravan Park Dobbs Weir, both within a few miles. You can walk here from either site if you're feeling virtuous, though driving is more sensible with small children. History enthusiasts won't find much - it's genuinely just woodland, not a former estate with crumbling mansions. But if you want fresh air, decent paths, and somewhere to tire out the kids without paying entry fees, it delivers. Bit muddy after rain, as woods are.
