Bryn Arw

The walk up Bryn Arw from Hereford is straightforward enough, and the summit rewards you with proper views across the Wye Valley and into Wales. It's not a dramatic peak - nothing like you'd find further west in the Black Mountains - but that's rather the point. This is a gentle Herefordshire hill that doesn't demand specialist kit or hours of your day.

You'll get the best of it on a clear day when the visibility stretches far enough to justify the effort. The ascent takes perhaps 45 minutes to an hour depending on your pace and which route you take from the outskirts of town. Families with older kids will manage it without complaint, though younger ones might find it a bit of a slog if they're not used to walking. The terrain is straightforward - no scrambling or technical bits to negotiate.

What appeals most is how this fits into a broader exploration of the Wye Valley rather than as a standalone destination. If you're based at one of the excellent local glamping spots - Goytree Glamping & Treehouses or Grove Farm Glamping are both exceptionally well-reviewed - this makes a solid morning or afternoon excursion. Offas Dyke Retreat, positioned slightly further afield, also works well as a base for tackling this and similar walks in the area.

The real value lies in the walking itself and the chance to see Hereford's landscape from above. Don't expect a café at the top or anything fancy. Bring water, decent boots, and aim for decent weather. It's the sort of place that reminds you why the English countryside deserves your time, even when it's not showing off.
