Pant-Skirrid Wood

The woodland floor at Pant-Skirrid is soft underfoot - that particular squelch of wet leaves and moss that only ancient forests manage. This is proper old-growth woodland just outside Hereford, the sort of place where the canopy gets so thick you'll lose the sky for stretches. Walking through here feels less like hiking and more like stepping into someone's living room, albeit one with 200-year-old furniture.

It's excellent for families who want woodland without the manicured feel of a country park. Kids genuinely engage with forests like this - there's no defined path guilt, no sense of having paid for a "experience". You just wander, find streams, turn over logs. Allow a couple of hours; you won't want to rush it. The terrain is gentle enough that even younger walkers manage fine, though it'll be muddy after rain - which, given we're in Herefordshire, is fairly often.

If you're staying at Goytree Glamping or Grove Farm - both excellent and only a few miles away - this makes a cracking half-day excursion. It's the sort of place that breaks up a longer holiday nicely, giving you space to breathe between bigger attractions. No facilities that we know of, so bring water and snacks.

Historically minded types will appreciate that this land has been continuously wooded for centuries. It's not dramatic, but it's genuine, and that matters. Skip it if you're after Instagram moments. Come here if you want to remember why you liked forests in the first place.
