Bryn Bras

The walk up Bryn Bras is short and sharp - you're looking at maybe 20 minutes from the car park if you've got reasonable legs. It's the kind of peak that rewards you instantly without demanding a full morning commitment, which makes it rather brilliant for families who don't fancy a five-hour slog up a Welsh mountain.

The summit sits just outside Aberystwyth and gives you proper panoramic views across Cardigan Bay when the weather plays ball. On a clear day you'll see across to the Preseli Hills and down the coast toward New Quay. The actual summit marker is modest - nothing fancy - but the landscape around it is what you're after.

Walkers will get the most from this one, particularly those with young kids in tow. It's steep enough to feel like an achievement without being genuinely technical. The paths are well-trodden and obvious, though can be muddy after rain so bring decent boots. History types might find the old slate quarries on the lower slopes interesting if they know what they're looking at, but this isn't a heritage site in the traditional sense.

If you're staying at Tyn Ffordd Fach or any of the other nearby campsites - Aber Camping isn't far either - Bryn Bras makes a cracking morning or late-afternoon walk. Aberystwyth itself has enough going on to fill a couple of days, and this peak gives you a proper sense of the landscape around the town without eating into a whole day. Worth the detour if you're in the area.
