Brynkinalt Park

Brynkinalt Park is a proper woodland nature reserve that sits just outside Wrexham, straddling the English-Welsh border in that wonky corner of Shropshire. The place is essentially a few hundred acres of mixed woodland - oak, birch, conifer - threaded through with walking paths that range from gentle meanders to properly steep climbs if you're after some leg work.

What you'll actually find there are mature trees, a stream running through the middle bit, and the kind of quiet you don't get near towns. Birdwatchers come for the usual woodland suspects - nuthatches, treecreepers, sparrowhawks if you're lucky. The paths are reasonably well-marked, though the ground gets boggy in places after rain, so decent footwear isn't optional.

This is the sort of place that works best for walkers and nature types rather than families with restless toddlers. You could knock out a pleasant two-hour loop without breaking a sweat, or spend half a day pottering about if you're into photography or just need space to think. Free to access, open all the time as far as I can tell - it's a proper community reserve.

If you're staying at Foxtail Holiday Park less than a mile away, it's worth a morning visit before breakfast or late afternoon when the light's decent. Don't expect facilities - there's no café or visitor centre - but that's rather the point. Bring water, wear boots, and go when the weather's been dry.
