Buchanty Spout

Water thundering down a narrow gorge with real force - that's Buchanty Spout in a nutshell. It's a waterfall on the Almond River near Perth, and while it's not going to rival anything in the Highlands for sheer scale, it's got genuine drama when the water's up. The narrow chasm creates this intense, almost violent flow that feels properly wild for somewhere so close to town.

You can walk right down to it, though the path gets slippy after rain and the rocks are genuinely treacherous underfoot. The whole thing takes maybe twenty minutes from the car park, so it's not a major commitment. Worth doing if you're in Perth for a day trip, less essential if you're just passing through. Kids will be entertained for half an hour or so, especially if they're the splashing-in-streams type, though you'd want to keep a close eye on them near the water - the rocks are unforgiving.

It works nicely as a short leg-stretch if you're basing yourself at somewhere like Luxury Hideaways, the upmarket park just four miles away. The waterfall's best visited after rain when there's proper volume, so check the weather forecast before making the trip. Summer can leave it looking a bit threadbare, all things considered. Free to visit, no facilities worth mentioning. Decent enough for what it is, but don't expect it to be the highlight of your Perthshire break.
