About Buck Crag

Standing at 336 metres, this limestone fell offers surprisingly good views across Morecambe Bay for relatively little effort. The summit sits above Grange-over-Sands and provides a proper workout without being too taxing - most walkers manage it in under two hours from the town centre. What makes Buck Crag worth the climb is the panoramic sweep it offers. On clear days you'll see across to the Yorkshire Dales and down the full length of Windermere. The limestone pavement near the top is interesting enough, though it's hardly spectacular compared to what you'll find further into the Lake District proper. Families with older children will find it manageable, but the final scramble might put off anyone with dodgy knees. The path can get muddy after rain, so decent boots are essential. For those staying at nearby caravan parks like Park Cliffe Windermere or Hill of Oaks, it makes for a decent half-day walk that won't exhaust you before tackling the bigger fells. The summit itself is a bit anti-climactic - just a cairn and some limestone outcrops - but the views more than compensate. Best tackled in the morning when the light hits Morecambe Bay just right.
