Grange promenade

The promenade at Grange-over-Sands curves along the Morecambe Bay shoreline like a Victorian postcard come to life. It's a proper nature reserve, the kind where you're as likely to spot wading birds as you are day-trippers with ice creams. The mudflats and salt marshes shift with the tides - come at low water and you get vast expanses of exposed sand; come at high tide and the whole bay transforms into something altogether wilder.

Walkers will find this genuinely rewarding. The promenade itself is flat and easy underfoot, but if you venture onto the actual reserve you'll need decent shoes - the ground can be boggy depending on season and recent rainfall. Birdwatchers should bring binoculars without question. Winter months are best for serious birding, but spring and autumn migrations pull in decent numbers too. It's not a "do in twenty minutes" kind of place. Give yourself at least a couple of hours if you're taking it seriously.

Stay at one of the nearby caravan parks - Meathop Fell is closest at 2.4 miles, or Haven Lakeland Leisure Park at 3.3 miles - and you're perfectly positioned for a morning walk here before heading inland towards the Lakes proper. The promenade works well as a gentler alternative to fell-walking on days when the weather turns temperamental. Admission appears to be free, which makes it decent value for a morning's outing. The town of Grange-over-Sands itself has cafes and facilities, so you're not roughing it.
