Buckholt Wood

Walk into Buckholt Wood near Canterbury and you're instantly into proper ancient woodland - the sort where sunlight filters through oak and beech in ways that make you forget the A28 exists nearby. It's a straightforward forest ramble rather than a destination with visitor facilities or themed attractions, which means you get the real thing: quiet paths, birdsong, and the occasional deer if you're lucky.

The wood works well for families with older kids who don't need constant entertainment - primary school age and up tend to enjoy the exploring aspect, though under-fives might find a full loop tedious. It's also excellent for serious walkers wanting to string together a longer route through the Kent countryside, and for anyone with binoculars and a bird book. You could easily spend an hour here or half a day, depending on whether you're just poking around or doing a proper woodland circuit.

There's no entrance fee or café, so come prepared with water and snacks. Morning light is best for photography, and autumn colours are genuinely worth timing a visit for. If you're based at Canterbury Camping and Caravanning Club Campsite, this is a solid option for getting the kids away from the tents without driving far - it's close enough for a morning outing. The site's 5.5 miles out, so allow about 15 minutes from there. Best visited when it's dry underfoot; after rain the paths get properly boggy.
