Buckland Rings

Two concentric Iron Age earthworks sit quietly on the Isle of Wight, and once you spot them from the right angle, you can't unsee the rings. Buckland Rings is an ancient fort - though "fort" might oversell it a bit - consisting of two defensive ditches that would have enclosed a settlement somewhere around 500 BC. The banks have flattened considerably over two and a half millennia, but they're still there if you know what you're looking at.

It's the sort of place that appeals most to people who actually care about Iron Age settlement patterns or archaeology buffs doing a methodical tour of the island's prehistoric sites. History enthusiasts will spend twenty minutes studying the earthworks and mentally reconstructing what life looked like here. Everyone else will probably spend five minutes, shrug, and move on. That's fair enough - it's not dramatic or photogenic in the way that, say, a Roman fort might be.

There's no visitor infrastructure here, no interpretation boards, no entrance fee because there's no entrance as such. It's just there on the landscape near Lymington. Access appears to be straightforward, though it's worth checking locally before you visit. If you're camping at one of the nearby sites - Lytton Lawn or Roundhill are both within a few miles - and you're the type who enjoys a low-key historical walk, you could easily combine this with a proper exploration of the area. But don't make a special journey for it alone.
