Sturt Pond

A proper working pond rather than a scenic showpiece, Sturt Pond sits quietly between Lymington and the coast, doing what it's done for centuries - providing a vital freshwater source for the New Forest ponies and cattle. Don't expect manicured lakeside walks or picture-perfect reflections here.

What you will find is an authentic slice of commoning life, where ponies wander down to drink alongside the occasional herd of cattle. The water level fluctuates dramatically with the seasons, sometimes shrinking to little more than a muddy depression in summer, other times spreading into a proper pond after heavy rains. Wildlife enthusiasts might spot herons picking their way through the shallows, while kids can learn about the ancient rights that still govern this landscape.

It's a five-minute stop rather than a destination, best combined with exploring the wider Forest from nearby holiday parks like Hoburne Bashley or Shorefield Country Park. The unmarked track from the minor road can be tricky to find - look for where ponies have worn a clear path down to the water's edge. Worth the brief detour if you're keen to see how the Forest really works, but don't make a special trip unless you're particularly interested in commoning traditions.
